In 1986 I began to document a property that would soon be leveled to become a Toyota factory near Lexington, KY. This was my first project to consciously try to save something from oblivion with photographs. While many of my projects involve history, I would not do another body of work consciously tracking irrevocable change until 2000-2003 when I went to China to photograph the Three Gorges Dam Project on the Yangtze River. With similar intent, in 2005 I traveled to Mississippi in the aftermath of Katrina.
